Co-op Action-Horror Partner
Resident Evil 5 took a lot of heat for being "too action, not enough horror," and honestly, I don't care. Punching a boulder as Chris Redfield is one of gaming's great meme moments, but the co-op underneath the jokes is genuinely excellent. Sharing ammo, reviving your partner, coordinating a suplex into a furnace with someone else on the other end of a controller - that's where this game lives. This compressed ISO keeps the whole campaign and its co-op DNA intact, even with the graphics dialed back for a handheld.

Chris Redfield and new partner Sheva Alomar investigate a bioterrorism outbreak across Africa, fighting hordes of Majini in a game that leans much harder into action than the survival-horror roots of earlier entries. You can move and shoot here, unlike RE4's stand-and-aim combat, and the melee options - punches, kicks, and full-on suplexes - make crowd control feel almost as satisfying as the gunplay itself. The story escalates into ridiculous, over-the-top territory as Albert Wesker returns for his final confrontation with Chris, and the PSP-era compression barely dents any of it.

Co-op Is Where This Game Actually Shines

Playing solo with the AI-controlled Sheva is perfectly functional - she conserves ammo and holds her own in fights better than older AI partners tend to - but grab a friend and this transforms into something else entirely. Reviving each other, trading weapons mid-fight, and pulling off team melee attacks against a crowd of Majini is chaotic in the best way. This port supports the same co-op setup as the original, and it remains the single best reason to boot this game up over playing solo.

Combat Leans Into Spectacle, And It Works

Unlike RE4's more deliberate, plant-your-feet combat, RE5 lets you move while shooting and leans hard into physical melee - Chris's straight punch, Sheva's roundhouse kick, and yes, the infamous boulder-punching sequence are all present and accounted for. It's less tense and more action-movie, but the weapon upgrade system carries over nicely, giving you a clear sense of progression through the campaign's roughly 12-hour runtime.

The Story Goes Fully Over-The-Top, And That's The Charm

Wesker's plan to unleash the Uroboros virus takes Chris and Sheva from African marshlands into an underground lab for a suitably ridiculous final showdown. The dialogue is cheesy, the plot logic is thin, but it's entertaining in exactly the way a summer action movie is - and this port preserves every cutscene and beat, letting the story's absurdity land the way it's meant to.

Tips Before You Jump In:
• Find a friend with the same ISO for local co-op - it's genuinely the best way to experience this game.
• Save up for the M3 shotgun as early as possible; it's the single best weapon investment in the campaign.
• The boulder-punching sequence just needs rapid button mashing - don't overthink it.
• Conserve ammo heavily during the Licker section, which is the toughest stretch in the whole game.
• Play with headphones for the full effect - the parasite screeches land harder in the dark.

Performance On PPSSPP

Performance holds up well on the emulator, running a steady 30fps on most Android devices with flagship phones capable of pushing 60fps after adjusting a few settings. The African setting's sunlight and dust effects survive the compression better than you'd expect, and load times stay short even during longer co-op sessions.

Is Resident Evil 5 Worth Playing Today?

If you've got a friend to play it with, yes, easily - the co-op elevates everything about this game, from the ridiculous story to the boulder-punching. Playing solo is still enjoyable, just less special. Don't go in expecting the tension of the earlier games; go in expecting a loud, cheesy, thoroughly entertaining co-op action romp, and this compressed ISO delivers exactly that.
